GOMBAK, 18 August 2016: It was a real boost for the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) when Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asan Gani bin Abdul Muthalif was invited to present his paper on “Energy Scavenging from Vibration with Piezoelectric” at an international conference held in Chennai, India, recently.

Dr. Asan Gani was the main guest at the “International Conference on Recent Advances on Technology Engineering and Science”. In his paper, Dr. Asan Gani, who was the Deputy Dean of Academic Affairs, Kulliyyah of Engineering, emphasised on converting vibrations produced from mechanical energy into electrical energy from smart materials that can be used by more people.

He said that vibrations have huge mechanical energy. “When we do not like vibrations, we use dampers to reduce it.”

In energy harvesting, he said, “reducing the vibrations by converting the mechanical energy into ‘electrical energy’ could be possible”.

He said, “This is a good way to generate electrical energy from mechanical energy,” adding that “for converting into electrical energy we have to use smart materials such as Piezoelctric materials.

The main points presented by Dr. Asan at the conference was reported in the Deccan Chronicle, the largest circulated English daily newspaper in South India. It was reported under the heading,“Convert mechanical to electrical energy: Malaysian varsity working on new device”.

The two-day conference highlighted the recent advances in technology, engineering and science. It was organised by C. Abdul Hakeem College of Engineering and Technology. ***
