GOMBAK, 1 August 2016: A national debating competition entitled “IIUM Open Maal Hijrah Debate Championship 2016” will be held at the main campus in Gombak from 7 until 10 October this year.
The event will be organised by the IIUM Arabic Debating and Public Speaking Club in collaboration with IIUM World Debate and Oratory Centre (IWON) and Islamic Education Division, Ministry of Education.
The competition will be held in two categories: School Category and University Category. In addition, for the school category, this competition is a replacement for Arabic category at Inter-school Debating Champion (IDC). The Arabic category has been postponed due some technical problems.
First vice president of IIUM Arabic Debating and Public Speaking Club, Muhammad Izzat said, “The main objective of this competition is to celebrate Maal Hijrah together with this Arabic debate event. It is hoped that the Arabic language could be used as a medium to strengthen the bonding of public and private universities in Malaysia with universities around Asia. It is also intended to produce good speakers in communicating and debating in the Arabic language.”
IIUM became the champion in this debating competition in 2015 beating USIM in the grand final.
