IIUM wins Australasian Inter-varsity debate

GOMBAK, 21 July 2016: IIUM team emerged champion of the Australasian Inter-varsity Debating Championship (AUSTRALS) 2016 beating their challenger from University of Sydney, the defending champion of the Debate, to become the first Asian team to win the championship.

The last Asian team to make it to the grand finals was the National University of Singapore in 2011.

IIUM team 1 was represented by Ameera Natasha Moore, Mubarrat Wassey and Sara Abdul Rahim who have been coached by Muhammad Abdul Latif, a senior assistant director of IIUM World Debate and Oratory Centre (IWON).

Ameera Natasha Moore won the best speaker title in the final.

Winners of the Top 5 of English as Second Language (ESL) category are all from IIUM. The overall best ESL AUSTRALS2016 speaker was Mubarrat Wassey, 2nd best speaker won by Sara Rahim, 3rd best speaker by Ameera Natasha Moore, 4th best speaker by Syarif Fakhry and 5th by Shitab Daiyan Akash. Universiti Malaya bagged the ESL category.

The Australasian Inter-varsity Debating Championship (AUSTRALS) is an annual debating tournament for teams from universities in the Australasian region.

The tournament is held every year in the month of July and it aims to promote the exchange of ideas and skills between participants and the wider community.

AUSTRALS is the second largest debate tournament in the world after The World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC).***
