IIUMToday members’ attachment with Media Prima to gain exposure

GOMBAK, 22 March 2016: It was indeed an eye opening experience for IIUMToday members. A three-day media attachment programmes with Natseven TV (NTV7) and New Straits Times Press (NSTP) held recently has been a rewarding and an unforgettable experience for the members.

A total of 32 IIUMToday members consisting of reporters and a public relations team, have undergone a media attachment at Media Prima and NSTP headquarters.

The objectives of the attachments were to strengthen news writing skills of IIUMToday members and to expose the reporters to the real journalism world. This attachment has indeed helped IIUMToday members to build a strong relationship and networking with journalists of the said media industry.

IIUMToday members who went for attachment with Media Prima were briefed by NTV7 Executive Editor (News Gathering), Zaman Huri Ahmad.

Zaman Huri explained the two processes on how news was being produced – news gathering and news production. He also stated that communication was the most important aspect of their task to make these two processes work effectively.

Among the experience IIUMToday members acquired during the attachments was that of tagging along the journalists on their assignments to gather news. Members got to experience the process of gathering news and observing how journalists performed their work.

One of the participants, Yasmin Yahya said, œWe got to know more on how reporters performed their job in the field and how to write news comprehensively, guided by the reporters.

œIt’s a fun experience to actually be in the NSTP office and to feel the real working environment of the journalists.

Apart from learning about news gathering, members got to expose themselves to news production process. They observed how the news was being produced after the news gathering process.

Media Prima Assistant Producer, Asrulnizam Kadir, accorded the members with great hospitality by showing them around the studio. He showed members the whole process of news production from editing to actual news production and let them experience for themselves on being in a studio.

The Managing Editor of IIUMToday, Puteri Najihah Othman said, œThis media attachment programme is annually conducted for every semester and we hope to have an attachment with different media during the coming semester.

The three-day media attachment was organised by the Department of Communication under the direction of the portal’s coordinator, Dr. Aini Maznina A. Manaf, to improve the performance of the IIUMToday and to bring up the quality of news to be delivered to IIUM community.***
