GOMBAK, 6 October, 2018: The IPRMSA (Institute of Public Relations Malaysia Student Association) – IIUM Chapter should aspire to produce future public relations practitioners who dare to be different from others, its Internal Advisor, Dr. Zeti Azreen Ahmad said.
For this to happen, she said, it’s not enough just to gain knowledge and skills. “Most important, future graduates should acquire qualities that can make you a much better human beings in terms of personality, character, attitude, moral values, reliability, and accountability, which is easy said but difficult to achieve,” she said.
She was speaking to some 30 members of the association, mostly the newly recruited, at its team building event on Friday (5 October) morning at HS Seminar Room.
The event was aimed to provide an overview of the mission, vision and overall plan of the association throughout the entire semester, and to strengthen the bond among the new members to enable them to work in a team for future events.
In welcoming the new members to the association, Dr. Zeti spoke of IPRMSA as being different from other societies, because of its direct link and association with the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM), a professional body that brings together practitioners, scholars and academics into the fraternity. She therefore called on association’s members to be pro-active.
Dr. Zeti also invited the association’s members to join the upcoming public relations talk titled “Sharks, Social Media & Policy” by Associate Professor Peter Simmons from School of Communication & Creative Industries, Charles Sturt University, Australia, which will be held on 16 October from 2:00pm until 4:00pm at IIUM Library Auditorium.
Also attended the event was IPRMSA’s former president, Lailatul Fitriyah Matsaini, who shared her past experience with new members. She said, “I faced many challenges when I became the president of the association. There were only 15 members and zero money in the fund. I didn’t really know how to handle it.”
“But I was very lucky to have had Dr. Zeti and Sir Aznan as our advisors. Do you know why I love this association? Firstly, I felt secured when I was able to develop my skills from being a member. It taught me the meaning of professionalism. For example, in a profession, punctuality is very important and I learnt this from here,” she added.
Meanwhile, the association’s External Advisor, Mr. Aznan Mat Piah, in his speech, said: “IPRMSA is a great platform to get yourself involved in many student activities. So, use this platform wisely to organise events, and develop your communication and leadership skills.”
A new member of the association, Md Akib Javed Lincoln said, “Frankly, I had no idea what this club was all about. A friend of mine shared me a link and asked me to register for the club. Later on, he gave me a short idea that has motivated me to be part of IPRMSA. I was overwhelmed after meeting lovely people. I hope to learn more and gain vast experience from this club.”
The president of the association, Afzal Nurshamiera Musa, later told IIUMToday, “I hope this programme will help to strengthen the bond between the mainboard and the new members as we are going to work as a team in the upcoming events.”
“Good bonding is vital to create positive environment in a society and we want to make sure that everyone is comfortable working together,” she added. ***
