GOMBAK, 16 November 2017: For the first time in IIUM, bike-sharing company oBike will collaborate with final year students of Communication for an event. They called it Explobike.
“It is an Explorace event in which participants have to cycle from one check point to another using oBikes,” said Naimah Ahmad Sazaki, programme manager of Explobike. She said there will be six checkpoints in which all participants will explore in order to win the race.
With the aim to educate the IIUM community on how to use the oBikes and embed the cycling culture in campus, Naimah said that Explobike is definitely a special event that will let the participants to enjoy the fun of cycling around campus with their friends, complete fun and challenging tasks.
As a final year student, she is also aware of the traffic situation in IIUM which led to the idea of Explobike.
“Currently, many IIUM students and staffs prefer driving the car, riding motorcycles and walking to get around the campus,” she said. “With the use of bicycles, it will not only lessen traffic jams in campus but also encourages a healthy lifestyle in IIUM,” she added.
As for now, Obike has offered some promotions like the cost for a 30-minute cycle ranges from RM1 to 50 cents. The apps also has many offers in which users can enjoy 50 cents for unlimited hours and sometimes, free rides for the whole day.
“I think IIUM has the potential of being a bike-friendly campus, it’s just a matter of familiarising with the culture,” Naimah told IIUMToday. She is also determined if more people get into cycling, there will be an improvement afterwards in the designated parking spaces for bicycles and section for cyclists to cycle safely.
To join the programme, RM35 is charged for IIUM students and RM45 will be charged for IIUM staffs and non-IIUM. All participants will receive the official Explobike microfibre t-shirt, medals, e-certificates and refreshments.
