KUALA LUMPUR, 3 October 2017: After two years holding the title of champion (since 2014) and only secured third place (2nd runner up) last year, the Malay Debate Club or Kelab Debat Bahasa Melayu once again emerged champion after securing themselves to the grand final stage in the ‘Ilmu Khas Detik’ Open Debate 2017 yesterday (2 October).
With the motion, ‘Dewan ini percaya undang-undang adalah mekanisme utama dalam pendidikan kepenggunaan’, IIUM (Team A) defeated teams from Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) and Institut Perguruan (IPG) Ilmu Khas at the grand final.
IIUM representatives, Zhilal Adnan and Asyraf Mustafha, who paired in Team A, were awarded with RM3000 and trophies for their performance, while Zhilal Adnan was crowned as the best speaker in the final stage. Both of them represented the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Law (AIKOL).
“I was participating in the same competition last year but did not make it to the final stage, and this year’s achievement is kind of a revenge for the previous tournament,” Zhilal told IIUMToday.
“It was unexpected as my team at first was only targeting to reach the semi-final stage after looking at the competitors’ ability and the debate was quite competitive,” he added.
Upholding their team principle, ‘Hardwork will never betray you’, Zhilal claimed that this winning was meant for all the hardships and efforts which had been shared together with the coaches and teammates.
“Earlier preparations with the team, the full commitment and putting great effort together, these were the strategies of winning,” he said.
With a total of 60 teams participating in the contest, the tournament was hosted by Institut Perguruan Kampus (IPG) Ilmu Khas, Cheras, and formatted based on British-parliament style.
Last year, this third edition tournament championship belonged to Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in 2016. ***
