GOMBAK, 12 March 2017: Villagers cooperated with IIUM students, cleaning up and beautifying the abandoned place called ‘Pusat Budi UIAM’ here in Batu 11. It is a small square of land with two buildings located by the road side, enlivened by students and villagers through gotong-royong spirit, with only one big goal – to officially establish it as an education centre.
Such was the scenario at ‘Projek Mesra Kampung 2.0’ run by volunteers of IIUM students, which was organised by Secretariat of Social Responsibility, Students’ Representative Council (SRC), yesterday.
The group kicked off its first volunteerism programme with free education service for the villagers of Kampung Batu 11.
“It aims to officially launch this Budi centre as general centre, that’s why today we have gotong-royong event, collaborating with the villagers to beautify this place again,” said its programme manager, Muhammad Izzat Hashim.
“After this, every weekend, we are going to conduct tuition classes for all Gombak community, including students from primary and secondary schools,” he said adding that “the educators would be among the IIUM students from different Kulliyyah”.
Meanwhile, Director of Surau Batu 11, Haji Amin, who represents the community, wholeheartedly welcomed the students to contribute to the community by initiating this project such as tuition classes for the kids and youngsters of the village.
“Personally, I felt much honoured as they choose our village among this area of Gombak Utara,” he said.
Haji Amin also expressed the hope that this project would aid the villagers in terms of education and they could benefit from this opportunity by integrating with IIUM students. ***
