GOMBAK, 24 February 2016 – The Institute of Public Relations Malaysia Student Association (IPRMSA) – IIUM Chapter is not only meant for communication students, but its membership is also open to all students from other departments or Kulliyyah who are interested to know more about public relations and to participate in its activities.

Its newly elected president, Samirah Hassan Salah Tholib is determined to see more students from other departments and kulliyyah joining the association.

“I hope this association will be known to many students, not only among communication students, since it is meant for all students who are interested in public relations,” Samirah told IIUMToday in an interview recently.

The association just had its Annual General Meeting last Thursday (18 February) and a new committee has been elected to serve the new tenure for the period 2016/2017.

“The association had been very active during the last tenure under the previous president, Siti Nur Aisyah Zulkefle, whereby a number of activities, including forums, have been organised with involvement of speakers from the public relations fraternity,” Samirah said.

“During the present tenure I hope to continue with the activities we have laid down which would be beneficial to members, especially in getting the right exposure to media and public relations industry.”

Samirah expressed the hope to invite public relations experts and media practitioners as guest speakers to give talk in forums to be organised soon so that members would be able to learn from the experts.

She added that IPRMSA would be an appropriate platform for students to gain exposure to the media and public relations industry and to establish networking with the professionals while studying in the university.

“We are still learning to become professionals. We will do everything possible and will make this association work to benefit everyone who will be joining the industry soon,” Samirah said expressing the hope that the new line-up would work together as a team to make the association known to all.

IPRMSA-IIUM Chapter had been established over a decade ago and was reactivated last year by former IIUM Rector, Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Syed Arabi Idid, who was also the former president of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM), the national body for public relations practitioners.

The AGM was attended by Head of Communication Department, Dr. Zeti Azreen Ahmad and the association’s external advisor, Aznan Mat Piah, who is also the Honorary Secretary and Council Member of IPRM. The internal advisor of the association is Mazni Buyong who is also the director of Communication and Media Centre at the Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences.

The association has organised many events for the past one year including a forum on crisis management, ChaLK 1.0 (Chat, Listen and Knowledge session), a forum on managing high profile signature event, a forum on the future of online journalism, and a Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR project involving the National Kidney Foundation.

The association’s events were participated by prominent practitioner like Aisha Rashid from Samanea Public Relations Consultancy and popular journalist and blogger, Datuk A. Kadir Jasin, from the media industry.

Besides, the association also participated in the Inaugural ASEAN Public Relations Excellence Award 2015 organised by IPRM recently which was held at Istana Hotel Kuala Lumpur.***
