GOMBAK, 9 February 2016 – Through random survey in IIUM Online, majority of the IIUM students agreed that the ‘extremism debate’ between Dr. Asri Zainal Abidin and Dr. Zamihan Mat Zain should be publicised. IIUMToday had gathered opinions from IIUM students to find out if they agree with the decision to have the debate behind closed door or otherwise.
Almost ten students from various kulliyyah had given their thoughts on the issue and these were some of the words that could be highlighted.
“In my opinion, it should be publicised. A good debate without slandering and using wise arguments should not create any fight,” said ‘Afif Ashroff, second-year student of Kulliyyah of Information and Communication Technology (KICT). He also added the fact that the debate can educate the public on how to celebrate the differences.
“ I agree for a debate, so we will understand more of the issues and we will know the elaboration of both sides,” said Zurie Ayesya Abu Johan, a final year BENL student of Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences. Ayesya stressed the importance to know both sides of the story.
Some others did not agree to have the debate in public.
“It is not necessary. The things that they have been debated for will not have an end. The khilaf issues among ulamak is something common. Why we should be so obsessed with one’s opinion and not respecting others’?” said Ahmad Solihin Abdul Nasir, first year student of Kulliyyah of Language and Management (KLM).
Recently, Dr. Zamihan Mat Zain had challenged Perlis Mufti Dr. Mohd Asri Zainal Abidin to an open debate but now wanted the matter to be conducted behind closed door. It has already been confirmed through both of their statements to the media. Besides, Perlis Mufti, Dr. Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin said that he was ready to openly debate ‘religious extremism’ in Malaysia with the Pertubuhan Ahli Sunnah Waljamaah (ASWAJA) chief and the date was re-scheduled by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Dato’ Seri Shahidan Kassim.***
